Forgive Yes - Forget Never

I had the opportunity to attend kirtan darbar and memorial service for the victims of operation blue star and 1984 riots. This memorial service was held on January 18, 2004 at Pearson convention center, Brampton. Kirtan darbar was the start of events to follow this year marking the 20th anniversary of 1984 riots.

This was a high-class event, which was well planned and organized by Sikh youth in partnership with various Sikh organizations. I was introduced to one of the main organizers, Mr. Kulvir Singh Gill, through my college time friend Nirmole Singh. After speaking to Mr. Gill, I found out that it took them about a month to get this event organized. He also mentioned that lot of Sikhs went through terrible events and lost their lives, at least we can do is remember them. There were hundred plus sevadars who were doing there assigned tasks with a smile on their faces. Every guest was being greeted by sevadars with "Sat Sri Akal" at the main gates and was being showed the way to get head cover and shoe service.

For three hours various groups of Sikh youth performed the kirtan paying homoage to victims. Closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Kulvir Singh Gill in English and Punjabi.

Rajeev Singh performed Ardaas. After Kirtan, guest had the opportunity to look at the picture exhibition describing the events of operation blue star and 1984 riots. Along with this, various stalls were organized for information sharing and donations. This included Gur Aasra Trust, Pingalwara, and Guru Gobind Singh Children's Foundation. The famous Sikh painters Amrita and Rabindra Kaur Singh, better known as twin sisters were present, who donated prints of their painting to raise donations. Langar was served after the Kirtan.

It was a very fulfilling experience for me to see what Sikh youth can achieve. The Sikh institutions and organization should look upon this event as an example. I congratulate the organizers of this event and thank them for showing the courage to up bring such an important event. At least in Canada, the future of Sikh faith seems to be in good hands. We must keep on organizing such events to keep reminding ourselves what happened and how we can stop this to happen in future. These events are the best way to pass down the Sikh history to our children so that our coming generations and the World will never forget what happened in 1984.

Dear Editor Sahib,

It was nice to read the comments made by Mr Puran Singh Pandhi of Toronto in response to my comments about Loak Bhilai Party. I share his sentiments expressed in the penultimate paragrgh of his letter that Mr Ramuwalia should be given at least one chance to lead the government in Punjab. To take this enthusiasm further it is of paramount importance that we make healthy criticism where he goes wrong or his image becomes stagnant and centres on only one issue.

After talking to him for two hours on my radio show and see him answering the questions asked by the telephone audience, I have no doubt in my mind that the man is through and through politician and is committed to his cause. I do not give less importance in reference to his fight against some travel agents but I do somehow feel that it is the people of Punjab who got to be educated about the trappings of these people. The victims are not only the brides; there are some boys also who marry a girl in the hope of going to a foreign country. In some cases they are badly treated by the new wife and her relatives. The same goes for illegal immigrants in many European countries. Their plight is beyond words. Mr Ramuwalia is doing an excellent job to get them the travel documents etc but we got to go back to the root cause of the problem. This problem is in the Punjab itself. Until that is addressed, people like Mr Ramuwalia,s efforts will not bring fruit in hundred years.

So in my humble opinion, the Punjab politicians should put all their energy to create an atmosphere of trust and confidence. Create a state which is corruption free. Every citizen should know their rights and duties. When there is an honesty and commitment on the part of the politicians and when they are answerable to the people only then the true atmosphere is created for the welfare of the masses.

Mr Pandhi rightly says that the Punjabi intellectuals are painfully quiet. Pandhi Sahib, jithey Choar Uchakka chaudhry tey gundi runn pardhan hovey uthey sharif banda aggey aonon jhijkda hai. And don’t forget the corrupt atmosphere during the elections. But then it does not mean that some so called intellectuals should not make an effort. After all they have also to exist in the same environment.

I hope Mr Pandhi now understands my point of view. My best wishes are with Mr Ramuwalia and such like individuals who strive to create a healthy political atmosphere for Punjab but I will be less than honest if I do not tell the honest truth.

I read news and views of comrade Balwant Singh that Punjab needs a third alternative but he failed to convince me as to what this third alternative would be. Being a comrade he should have been suggesting the communist party. May be he knows that it would not be possible that the communists would be successful in winning the lections in Punjab anyway. The progressive parties could never convince the general public in Punjab that they were worthy of governance. The only alternative I could think of is the Loak Bhilai Party lead by Mr Balwant Singh Ramuwalia. I had the chance to interview him couple of months ago on my radio programme. I have no doubt that his intentions are sincere but his outlook is not broad enough to embrace all the issues waiting to be addressed. The only issue he repeatedly seems to be highlighting again and again is that of the problem of brides left behind in India by boys living in Canada, America or Britain. He got to be more visionary, more assertive, more expletive about other issues being faced by the Punjabies. I had a radio debate programme only this week. Most of the callers were of the opinion that the Loak Bhilai Party's manifesto is far too limited to convince the Punjabi voters that this party could be the third alternative. But to be fair to Mr Ramuwalia, the voters are so used to only Congress and Akalies that it would be extremely hard to shift their view point.

IT IS A VERY GOOD NEWS. I was (and I am sure millions of Indians and Pakistanis around the world) delighted to hear the news that leaders of both India and Pakistan are going to meet in February to further the peace talks.

There are so many things which can be said about this and more meetings but most important thing about this whole thing is that they should have done it long time ago.It was proved after three wars and it has been proven all over the world that wars do not solve the problems, only ' talks' can solve the problems.

IT IS A CONFLICT OF THE POLITICIANS: People on both sides, always wanted peace in the region. My two trips to Pakistan has shown me the real side of the people of Pakistan.Millions of Pakistanis would like to have peace with India, so that can do business together. They would like to visit India.There are millions of Muslims in Pakistan who would give anything to visit Ajmer Sharif and see Taj Mahal. There are more monuments of Moghul period in India than in Pakistan. They would love to visit Taj Mahal and other places which shows the golden period of Moghul raj.They would love to do shopping at Canaught Place in Delhi and visit the Indian side of Kashmir.

Similarly Indians would love to go to Pakistan and see two cricket teams playing in PAKISTAN. Millions of sikhs would love to go to Pakistan and pay their respect to all the Gurdwaras of Pakistan and take a good care of them which is not done properly right now.

European countries fought with each other for centuries and then realised that there is no benefit in fighting wars, the only way to make the countries prosper is to live peacefully and respect each other's identity. India and Pakistan should have learnt this long time ago from their experience.America and Canada went to wars few times and also realised that wars do not solve problems and now they live next to each other like two brothers living togther.

I hope the talks which are going to take place in February 2004 bring the leaders of both sides to senses and for once they think of PEOPLE of both India and Pakistan, and not for themselves.Amen Gurjit Proothee

Insects in biscuit packet!

Next time you happen to buy a pack of Parle biscuits, check it before munching it as it might carry insects. This is what happened with Mr Vikas Passi, a resident of Upkar Nagar Colony in Civil Lines area here.

Mr Passi, who brought the packet of biscuits to the Ludhiana Tribune office said the packet of Parle Magix biscuits was purchased from a grocery shop in the colony. On close inspection one of the two packets had a powdery substance in it and insects could be seen crawling over it.

The customer obtained the telephone numbers of the company's corporate office in Mumbai and informed them of having been given a pack of biscuits which was not fit for human consumption. But what Mr Passi got was evasive response of the company.

In response to his complaint what the victim received was a letter terming Mr Passi as a victim of unfortunate circumstances. A couple of days later a local representative also came to meet the customer but his attitude was no different from that of the company.

An agitated and upset Mr Passi said, "What hurts most is that a reputed company should pass off substandard and defective edible stuff to its customers and then try to get away by attributing the lapse to circumstances beyond their control. It means they refuse to own responsibility."

He wants the department concerned to take stern action against such defaulting companies.
