I am surprised to see a new occasion for Sikhs to wish each other Happy Republic Day. (iek il&w&y bwzI). I have not heard any Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Bengalis, South Indians, or even Gujratis wishing each other a Happy Republic day.

I believe, for a Sikh all the days of the year are the same.

And since all those who left India, for greener pastures, it was because the country ( due to corruption and BweI BqIjw vwd) did not hold any more promise for them ( or any one else who has left it). We will all be lying, to be wishing something meaningless, a mere display of hollow patriotism.

The question is, "Is France really worried about getting swamped by other cultures by losing its secularity or is it just a political gambit? In recent years a great number of immigrants from Muslim countries had been coming to France and settling here. Of course the incoming people were bringing their religion and cultural values with them but they were not promoting as much as the immigrants in Britain. The integration of new comers into the main stream has been much greater in France in comparison to UK.

In spite of this, National Front, the right wing party of LePen wanted to cash on this point. They flaunted the fact of Muslim culture affecting the secular image of France and they started to gain the sympathy and cooperation of lay French masses. Conservative Government of Chirac has to do something to combat and impress upon the people that they are equally keen to preserve the secularity of this country.

Banning of Hijab is just a political stunt by the current Government otherwise there was not much acrimony surfacing and visible. I have three granddaughters in different grades of the schools. The younger ones told that there were Muslim girls in their classes but none of them covered their heads and they participated in the games and other activities as much as the others. The older one said that there was only one girl in her class who wore Hijab but that too very liberally; she took that off frequently especially when taking part in class and sport activities. I have been here, in France, now for the last five weeks. Every week, more than once, I visited the shopping Malls, especially at Christmas time when those places are teaming with shoppers. The number of ladies with headdresses, I came across, could be counted on the fingers of one hand. Just about seven km from the place where I am staying, there is a big number of flats and most of them are occupied by the immigrants from Muslim countries. Even in the shops around that area, the number of females supporting Hijab was quite minimal.

Since the beginning of seventies, we have been visiting Europe frequently and every time passed through France. Whereas racial slurs were very common in UK, we always found very amicable relations here among various races. The game 'petanque' is very common, especially during summer times. While travelling around we seldom found the people of just one race participating in the game, always mixed crowd. Most of all the police, we came across, has as many brown and black faces as the white. In the campsites where we stayed, we never faced any discriminatory attitude. Even in Barbes area of Paris, which is known as the Arabs sector, the number of covered heads was quite minimal. Fusion of races is so good there, that, until I was told, I could not guess it was the area full of people from Arabian countries (their complexion is not much different and the language; we did not know the both sides). The number of Asians, Asian Restaurants and Asian Stores there is not less either, as well. In spite of all this amicability, why then, this sudden eruption of the problem of Hijab?

As commented by a reporter in the media, the cordial relationship of Diaspora with the indigenous population hindered National Front Party of LePen's aspiration to gain popularity. It is said that National Front, through their hirelings in the immigrant community, enhanced the use of Hijab. This commenced to instigate the French people to start talking against the Muslims. NF was now getting upper hand on ruling Government. More the Muslim supported Hijab, more the people diverted their attentions towards LePen. Chirac has to take some steps to ward off this propaganda. Theory of SWAMP of UK's Enoch Powel was coming into action. Chirac found the easy way to win back by putting ban on the use of Hijab. Enouch Powel has been downtrodden, what would be the fate of LePen? The rest of the articles, Skullcap and size of Cross, are just cosmetic issues.

And regarding turban, the official never realised its existence even. It is said there are 5,000 Sikhs in France but how many are supporting turban to make it visible in France. During the last five weeks I have been going round the shops and roaming around the big, very big Mall  very frequently, only once my wife came across a Sikh. "An official at the Ministry of National Education, which is responsible for negotiating the law with Parliament, declined to comment, except to say, 'What? There are Sikhs in France?' A senior official at the Ministry of Interior responsible for religious matters said, ' I know nothing about the Sikh problem. Are there many Sikh in France.'" (The New York Times as reported in LeMonde dated January 18/19) It is learnt that Turban problem is going be treated as a special case and the authorities would relax if the use of turban is 'discrete.' What would be the criteria of 'discrete'?
And how paradoxical it is: in Tunisia, a Muslim country, the girls in the schools are not allowed to put Hijab and, perhaps, same goes for Turkey.

I don't think that doubt is the main problem between India and Pakistan as Mr.. Kuldeep Nayer described in his article.

Main problem between India and Pakistan is the ego. Both countries had tried to view the Kashmir issue by their own way. Both ignores each others. No one see the issue by the other way. Both build the military power to solve this issue by the muscles. After the attack on Indian parliament India thinks that he can solve this problem once and now with force. After keeping the forces on border for months India realized that he can not solve this by force because pakistan is not the same as it was in bangladesh war time. His military muscle are now different. On the other hand Pakistan also realized that military muscles are just to show and not to solve the Kashmir issue. It can only be solved by mutual understanding and negotiations. So Pakistan got what he was trying to get to bring India on the table not on the battle field. Both country knows that no one can win the war if the war broke out.

India now realize that the Kashmir issue is an issue that remains unsolved and must be solved with no matter what, because Pakistan is not going to let it down at any way and at any cost. Kashmir issue has eaten everything in both countries i.e. economy and relations. The main reason for india to solve this issue is that he wants to attract the foreign investment and trying to compete with China. Without solving the Kashmir issue peace can not prevail in this region and without peace investors can not come. They go directly to China.

America is interested to solve this issue because he wants India to come on his side and China is on the top of his list after Soviet Union. So he is pushing Pakistan to be reluctant on the Kashmir. If America succeed in resolving the Kashmir issue India definitely curve towards America. India also seeking permanent membership in the United Nation for which America is not agreed at this time . So both countries have their own agendas. If the Kashmir problem is solved India Pakistan and America will solve their own problems.

Ego of the both countries will go by force not by choice. Both countries are at their knees to solve this issue. Both have learned their lessons and now both showing these signs.

Forgive Yes - Forget Never

I had the opportunity to attend kirtan darbar and memorial service for the victims of operation blue star and 1984 riots. This memorial service was held on January 18, 2004 at Pearson convention center, Brampton. Kirtan darbar was the start of events to follow this year marking the 20th anniversary of 1984 riots.

This was a high-class event, which was well planned and organized by Sikh youth in partnership with various Sikh organizations. I was introduced to one of the main organizers, Mr. Kulvir Singh Gill, through my college time friend Nirmole Singh. After speaking to Mr. Gill, I found out that it took them about a month to get this event organized. He also mentioned that lot of Sikhs went through terrible events and lost their lives, at least we can do is remember them. There were hundred plus sevadars who were doing there assigned tasks with a smile on their faces. Every guest was being greeted by sevadars with "Sat Sri Akal" at the main gates and was being showed the way to get head cover and shoe service.

For three hours various groups of Sikh youth performed the kirtan paying homoage to victims. Closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Kulvir Singh Gill in English and Punjabi.

Rajeev Singh performed Ardaas. After Kirtan, guest had the opportunity to look at the picture exhibition describing the events of operation blue star and 1984 riots. Along with this, various stalls were organized for information sharing and donations. This included Gur Aasra Trust, Pingalwara, and Guru Gobind Singh Children's Foundation. The famous Sikh painters Amrita and Rabindra Kaur Singh, better known as twin sisters were present, who donated prints of their painting to raise donations. Langar was served after the Kirtan.

It was a very fulfilling experience for me to see what Sikh youth can achieve. The Sikh institutions and organization should look upon this event as an example. I congratulate the organizers of this event and thank them for showing the courage to up bring such an important event. At least in Canada, the future of Sikh faith seems to be in good hands. We must keep on organizing such events to keep reminding ourselves what happened and how we can stop this to happen in future. These events are the best way to pass down the Sikh history to our children so that our coming generations and the World will never forget what happened in 1984.

Dear Editor Sahib,

It was nice to read the comments made by Mr Puran Singh Pandhi of Toronto in response to my comments about Loak Bhilai Party. I share his sentiments expressed in the penultimate paragrgh of his letter that Mr Ramuwalia should be given at least one chance to lead the government in Punjab. To take this enthusiasm further it is of paramount importance that we make healthy criticism where he goes wrong or his image becomes stagnant and centres on only one issue.

After talking to him for two hours on my radio show and see him answering the questions asked by the telephone audience, I have no doubt in my mind that the man is through and through politician and is committed to his cause. I do not give less importance in reference to his fight against some travel agents but I do somehow feel that it is the people of Punjab who got to be educated about the trappings of these people. The victims are not only the brides; there are some boys also who marry a girl in the hope of going to a foreign country. In some cases they are badly treated by the new wife and her relatives. The same goes for illegal immigrants in many European countries. Their plight is beyond words. Mr Ramuwalia is doing an excellent job to get them the travel documents etc but we got to go back to the root cause of the problem. This problem is in the Punjab itself. Until that is addressed, people like Mr Ramuwalia,s efforts will not bring fruit in hundred years.

So in my humble opinion, the Punjab politicians should put all their energy to create an atmosphere of trust and confidence. Create a state which is corruption free. Every citizen should know their rights and duties. When there is an honesty and commitment on the part of the politicians and when they are answerable to the people only then the true atmosphere is created for the welfare of the masses.

Mr Pandhi rightly says that the Punjabi intellectuals are painfully quiet. Pandhi Sahib, jithey Choar Uchakka chaudhry tey gundi runn pardhan hovey uthey sharif banda aggey aonon jhijkda hai. And don’t forget the corrupt atmosphere during the elections. But then it does not mean that some so called intellectuals should not make an effort. After all they have also to exist in the same environment.

I hope Mr Pandhi now understands my point of view. My best wishes are with Mr Ramuwalia and such like individuals who strive to create a healthy political atmosphere for Punjab but I will be less than honest if I do not tell the honest truth.

But that act was done by the man and could be handled by the man.
